ECLIPTIC

Ecliptic is a term borrowed from astronomy, describing the imaginary trajectory of the Sun's path around the Earth over the course of a year. This perspective is easily accepted because we witness the Sun rise, move, and set. However, the truth is that the Sun is a stationary celestial body, and it is the Earth that revolves around it. Similarly, at first glance, this project appears to focus on my daughter Sofia, who has Down syndrome, and her journey through her first year of life. In reality, it is primarily my personal journey as a mother of a child with special needs.

When Sofia was born, I was just 24 and knew nothing about Down syndrome. Experienced obstetricians diagnosed her immediately at birth, and a few days later, a blood test confirmed it. No one could guide me on how to navigate this unexpected reality; I was even told I could leave her behind in the maternity ward without any questions. Today, Sofia is a beautiful young woman, yet her disability will always be a part of our lives. She is now old enough to ask me about her birth, and this project serves as our conversation, where I attempt to answer her questions.

With Sofia's help, we reconstructed her arrival in my life. To better understand each other’s emotions, we exchanged roles. I shared my experiences of accepting her Down syndrome and the health challenges that followed, while she masterfully acted out those moments for my camera. I also took on her role, trying to embody her perspective. Throughout this project, I incorporated Sofia’s snapshots to enrich our dialogue and allow her voice to shine through. Her photographs are a perfect reflection of her: offbeat, simple, and full of life. Her inner strength and love of life have helped us overcome the trials we faced together.

Sofia may not remember her first year, but she often surprises me by saying, “Mum, you are the best; you saved my life.” I gently correct her, saying, “No, dear, I just gave it to you. It was you who saved us both.” Ecliptic aims to support parents who feel as though the ground is slipping away beneath them because their baby has Down syndrome. I believe that sharing our experience can ease their pain and reduce their fear of the unknown.

This project is also my tribute to Sofia. I wanted to give her the space to express herself and showcase her incredible empathy, kindness, and vitality. Our journey together has transformed me, strengthened me, and taught me to challenge the limitations imposed by society. I am convinced that we must rethink our beliefs about individuals with Down syndrome and work towards creating a more inclusive society. Through Ecliptic, I hope to inspire others to recognize the beauty and potential in every individual, regardless of their challenges.
